In the ongoing debate about gun violence and safety, mass homicides get national attention. Yet, signifcantly more people commit suicides with guns than are murdered by one. In 2010, 19,392 people killed themselves with a firearm while 11,078 people were victims of homicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which tracks detailed data on fatal injuries.
Who are killing themselves? White males kill themselves with guns in greater numbers and in greater proportion than blacks, Asians, or Hispanics. While suicide is most common among the elderly (over 85 years old), there are notable peaks with the young and middle-aged.
